Clean up your Computer

Jul 24, 2010

The first thing to do would be to remove any unnecessary program, you can do this through add/remove programs in the windows control panel or you could use Revo Uninstaller which also checks for leftover files and registry entries.  If there are any programs which allow you to uninstall specific parts that you don;t use then you could do this too.

After this i would suggest using CCleaner to check for other removable files, further settings can be added by creating a file called winapp2.ini and the ccleaner forums have a list of entries that can be added, in general its easier though to set up custom locations via the custom location options.

A few things I added were

[iTunes update cache]
Detect=HKCU\Software\Apple Computer, Inc.\iTunes
FileKey1=%localappdata%\Apple\Apple Software Update|*.*

[iTunes iPod Firmware]

DetectFile=%appdata%\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
FileKey1=%appdata%\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates|*.*

[Handbrake logs]

[kaspersky update files]
DetectFile=%ProgramData%\Kaspersky Lab\AVP11\Data\Updater\Temporary Files
FileKey1=%ProgramData%\Kaspersky Lab\AVP11\Data\Updater\Temporary Files|*.*|RECURSE
Warning=”To clean this you need to turn off self defence within Kaspersky settings.”

[*Temporary Files(*.TMP, *._MP)]
Warning=”This will check the whole system drive for these files.  Can take a while.”

[*Backup Files(*.BAK, *.OLD)]
Warning=”This will check the whole system drive for these files.  Can take a while.”

[*Log Files (*.LOG)]
Warning=”This will check the whole system drive for these files.  Can take a while.”

[*Global Index Files (*.GID)]
Warning=”This will check the whole system drive for these files.  Can take a while.”

[*Checkdisk Files (*.CHK)]
Warning=”This will check the whole system drive for these files.  Can take a while.”

These entries add a few locations i found weren’t covered and also options to search the whole drive for things like .tmp and .log files which can be safely removed.

Next you could search for duplicate files, CloneSpy is a free program that can be used to find identical files it does have limitations in that wont find things like 2 music tracks that are the same but encoded differently.

iTunes can be used to find duplicate files, the option is in the file menu and if you hold down shift while choosing it it will change it to search for exact duplicates, one problem though is it will only delete files that are in the iTunes library location.

For finding duplicate photos then picasa can be used, under tools>experimental is an option to show dupliate files.  If using this then ensure that you have not set it up to index any backup locations used for photos as it will also pick these up.  It may also be a good idea to get rid of any blurry or mistakenly taken photos of tables etc.

The next thing would be to have a look at your drive and see which areas are using the most space.  Windirstat will give a graphical representation of which folders are using the most space.  You can use this to manually see if there is any folders or files that can be deleted to free space.  Also manually go through the program files folder and application data folders and remove any files from programs you know you definitely uninstalled.

When you first create a website search engines don;t know its there so you need to make them aware of it. Doing nothing they may find it as they trawl the web and pick up links to it from other sites. The best thing to do therefore is to actually submit the site to search engines.

Google, Yahoo and Bing are the obvious places to start and sites can be submitted at the following links. (requires yahoo username)

Submitting the main page should suffice but you could also submit the rss feed url of your site too.

The next thing to do would be to create a sitemap for your site, when the webcrawler for the search engine visits your site the sitemap will give it a list of all the pages it should index. If you are using a blog, CMS or forum platform you should be able to find a plug-in to automatically create one.  For instance this add-on will create a sitemap file and submit new versions automatically for wordpress.

The yahoo siteexplorer also allows you to register an RSS feed and you can use google or Bing webmaster tools to submit sitemap or rss feed urls.

Google and bing webmaster tools will also give information on how they are indexing your site.

After doing this it is just a case of waiting for the site to be added.

You may also wish to look into Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) to get the best from websites.
